Street Crimes Unit

While in the area of the 2800 block of W. Garden Street at approximately 11:30 pm, Sergeant S. Cover observed a male carrying some computer equipment while riding a bicycle. Sgt. Cover made contact with the male and inquired about the merchandise as to where he had gotten it from and who's equipment it was. While talking with the male, Sgt. Cover also discovered the male was in possession of several watches and some jewelry. Believing that these items were possibly evidence from a recent burglary, Sgt. Cover seized the property and began investigating further. Sgt Cover ran a check on recent burglaries in the area and found nothing involving the items in question. He then plugged in and turned on the computer to see a login screen with a name different than the name given by the suspect. Using the name acquired through his investigation, Sgt Cover was able to locate a current address where the burglary may have occurred. Sgt. Cover went to the address and found bicycle tire marks and footprints in some mud under a window unit air conditioner and then noticed it appeared that the air conditioner had been removed recently. Sgt. Cover was able to contact a family member of the resident who informed him the resident was in the hospital following open heart surgery. The family member then responded and let officers into the house to continue their investigation. Once inside, officers observed a computer station but all that was left were cords and a keyboard and not the components found in the possession of the suspect. Further investigation led them to a bedroom where they discovered jewelry missing from a bowl on the dresser where the victim kept it. Sgt. Cover then went to speak with the suspect again who voluntarily admitted to burglarizing the residence.

After a few seconds, the suspect emerged from a back room in the apartment and was ordered to lay on the floor until back up officers could arrived. Once back up arrived and the male, along with another male located inside the apartment were secured, Officer Logan searched the area that was immediately accessible to the suspect and located a small .22 caliber handgun under a childs bed.
